Welcome to 2010. I trust you had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday and are looking forward to the year ahead.
The Lord Mayor and I are delighted to be joining people from 14 different countries who will become Australian citizens on Sunday 24th January at the Bracken Ridge Lions Club Citizenship in McPherson Park, Bracken Ridge. This is the seventh year there has been a community-run Citizenship Ceremony in Bracken Ridge and it is wonderful to see so many people from different countries and cultures moving into the local area. Thanks to Bracken Ridge Lions and Lionesses for their help and don’t forget to have a ride on the miniature steam trains.
Don’t forget the “Movies in the Park”. On Friday 29 January, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian will showing in the Phillip Vaughan Park, Nemira Street, Carseldine with a sausage sizzle prior to the movie starting at 7pm. Bring a chair or blanket & don’t forget the insect repellent.
Brisbane City Council is providing funding to local non-profit community groups to improve and develop services in Brisbane. Projects that achieve one or more of the following criteria may be eligible for funding: encourage physical activity, respond to local and city wide community issues, foster an understanding of Brisbane's history and cultural heritage, promote creativity, culture or the arts or develop the capacity of local community groups to deliver services. Funding round 2 opened 11 January and closes 1 March 2010. Funding amounts range from $2,000 to $50,000. I encourage community groups to apply. For more information, please contact my ward office.
Council Cabs contract with Yellow Cabs has expired and from January 2010 the service will be provided by Black and White Cabs. To use this service, simply phone 3403 2227 on the day before day of travel to register your details with Black and White Cabs. The service will continue to run as it has previously with nothing else changing except the service provider.
Between January and March, Council will be running a variety of free activities for people of all ages. These include clay hand building and decoration classes, walking for leisure, health and fitness and Introduction to Hapkido. Introduction to Hapkido teaches you self defence by showing you how to escape and break a hold when you are pinned to the ground. These are occurring across the ward. For more information, please contact my ward office.
Brisbane City Council has launched a free early warning weather system to alert people to the anger of damaging storms, floods and other serious events such as bushfires. People can register with Council to receive warnings via SMS to mobiles, email, voicemail (to landlines) and web alerts by logging onto Council’s website and filling out a form. The web address is www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/earlywarning. Council also has free online Flood Flag Maps and Floodwise Property Reports, which show residents how overland flow, river and creek flooding might affect their properties.
