Citizenship ceremony
24 January, 2010
People from 14 different countries became Australian Citizens on Sunday 24th January at the Bracken Ridge Lions Club Citizenship ceremony in McPherson Park, Bracken Ridge.
Cr Amanda Cooper presided over the ceremony and welcomed the 37 new residents from United Kingdom, India, New Zealand, China, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Germany, Taiwan, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, United States and Philippines.
The new Australians were among some 16,000 people who became citizens at more than 300 ceremonies right across the nation this January.
This was the seventh year there has been a community-run Citizenship Ceremony in Bracken Ridge and it was wonderful to see so many countries and cultures moving into the local area.
It is always a memorable day for the new residents, their family and friends, including one of the new citizens cutting a celebration cake.
The Bracken Ridge Lions’ Steam train day is always an important part of the event with new citizens getting a free ride on the miniature trains to celebrate.
